PSP Piracy Sky-Rockets « Thread Started on Mar 11, 2008, 11:13am »
As many of you know, with the expanding universe of Custom PSP Firmware(CFW) there is also an expanding universe of official Playstation Portable Games being pirated over the internet on such places as torrent sites, in the form of ISO and CSO files.
Here is an example of such piracy on one torrent website:
God of War: Chains of Olympus - 94,154 Patapon - 112,183 Ratchet & Clank - Size Matters - 197,113 Crush - 48,959 LOCO ROCO - 163,904 Wipeout Pulse - 116,965 Castlevania X Chronicles - 102,354 Metal Gear Solid - Portable Ops (Not Including Plus) - 231,054 Burnout Dominator - 269,486
Now that's just one website, not including private trackers or any larger types of huge download portals. If you ask me, that is a tremendous amount.
Take a look on the number for God of War:Chains of Olympus. The number of downloads from that particular site is 94,154. That's almost 95,000 downloads on just that site since the game's release on the afternoon of last Wednesday. We're looking at almost 100,000 downloads in a week. That's a loss of almost 4 Million dollars for Sony. Just a week!
If this keeps up, what's going to happen to Sony? They're going to be losing money like crazy just like they have been just this week($4 Mill.) Isn't it about time Sony put their foot down and did away with all of this? Isn't this just too much?

Wow, I'm surprised that site hasn't been shut down. Even underground sites like that should be tracked without too much troubled, especially if companies are losing dollars by the millions. When sales are lower than expected and reviews are good, that should be a big hint. I only support downloading something like that if it's old. Such as downloading a PSOne game. Whatever company produced it has gotten their money's worth.

Wow... I have custom firmware on my PSP with three PSP games my friend gave me but I mostly just use it to play Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo roms. If I were to download, I would probably use it on a try out basis, and actually purchase the game if I enjoyed it. I knew it was bad if my friend was able to download PSP games, but I didn't really think enough about it. That's just horrible...

It's really not something one really thinks about. I'm sure alot of people who download games don't really think about anything besides the fact that they have found a game that they want. Piracy isn't all that big of a problem in the long run, at least in the past it hasn't.
Sony has known about the fact that the Custom Firmware can manipulate the software and enable emulators and all of these altered, compressed PSP games. They had scared homebrewers like "Dark_Alex" away once upon a time, when they threatened to sue early PS3 homebrewers months back, but they have just been letting homebrew technology go as of recently.
If you think about it, it could have been their way of being able to increase PSP sales. If people know of all this stuff they can do with the hardware, like use emulators for various systems, then wouldn't that be a reason for people to buy the system over the DS?
I just think they could always make more money in sales than the money they were to lose in terms of piracy through torrent sites. They may well have been able to do it back then, too, but I think it's finally beginning to catch up with them. If this anticipated God of War game made them lose almost 4 Million Dollars in a week, what do you think would become of their losses when other games come out this year, like the equally anticipated RPG game, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII?
Piracy is understandable for some people, but it has it's limits. If someone just doesn't have the money for a game they really want, and they download it to play it a few times and delete it, and perhaps buy it later, that is one thing. With that, Sony will get their money eventually. But it's an entirely different ball game when you have people who refuse to buy any games and continually download game after game off of torrent sites and other major upload portals. That's just showing that they don't care as long as they get to play their games.
